AEO score was 38 when I started. Main issues were no FAQPage schema, no llms.txt, and content not structured in direct-answer format. Fixed all three and score went to 71. Started appearing in Perplexity citations within 2 weeks.

The checker flagged that my content used too much first-person language which makes it harder for AI engines to extract factual answers. Restructured key paragraphs into declarative statements. Noticeable improvement in ChatGPT citations.

One thing that really helped — adding a clear Quick Answer section at the top of each article that summarises the main point in 2-3 sentences. AI engines seem to pull from these directly.

Is there a way to verify you're actually being cited in AI responses? The checker gives a score but I'd like to confirm actual citations.

Search for your brand name or specific phrases from your content in ChatGPT and Perplexity. If your content is being cited you'll see your URL in the sources list. Takes a few weeks after optimisation before citations appear consistently.
